Every year more and more people discover a wonderful new vacation spot, South Africa. Despite its often turbulent past this country has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. It also has a highly productive wine growing region just to the north of the amazing city of Cape Town.

The southern tip of Africa was settled by the Dutch in the sixteen hundreds. The Cape Town area was originally used as a coaling station and supply depot on the way to the orient. However, by the eighteen hundreds the British had become the dominant world power and taken over the administrative running of the area. Yet visitors will recognize right away the strong Dutch influence in everything from language to architecture. In the past few years the Cape Winelands have become a wonderful new place to vacation, drawing visitors from all over the world.

The area is geographically diverse and covers everything from sleepy colonial style towns to crashing surf on the Atlantic beaches. One of the great things about the region is that it offers something for everyone. Romantic couples are just as happy as young families who are looking for a low key getaway that they call all enjoy.

Perhaps the most well known of the wine growing regions is Stellenbosch. The name is synonymous with miles of vineyards and a fantastic range of top quality products. Many of the vineyards are open to the public and they can see how the wine is produced from how the grapes are grown to how the wine is bottled and labeled. It really is a fascinating process that keeps many people in business.

Collectively the regions are known as the Boland, the Afrikaans word for an upland. The Franschhoek Valley region has been producing quality wines for over three hundred years. The original French Huguenot settlers were keen to plant vines and cultivate some really special vintages. They really did an amazing job and the beautifully laid out farms are still a job to see today.

The local people refer to the wine growing region as the Bolands, which is an Afrikaans word for the uplands. The region encompasses the best known region of Stellenbosch, but also the beautiful and productive Franschhoek Valley which has been growing grapes for over three hundred years. In addition the Constantia region is also very well known and has been producing top quality wines for well over a century.

The tourist industry has brought a much needed revitalization to the area. There are many new jobs in the service sector for people to work in the restaurants, hotels and wineries. The accommodations range from the comfortable and friendly bed and breakfast, to five star luxury hotels with all the amenities.

South Africa has been through more than its share of turmoil, but the wine growing regions present a side of the country that is often overlooked. There is a wonderful history and heritage that in now a big part of the economic and cultural development. Fair trade is also a factor and many wines are produced under world wide agreements to promote sustainable agricultural development for everyone.
